Britain's government will ban the sale of disposable vapes and limit their cornucopia of flavors to prevent children from becoming addicted to nicotine, officials said Monday.

Figures from the Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) charity suggest 7.6% of 11 to 17-year-olds now vape regularly or occasionally, up from 4.1% in 2020.

"You talk to any parent or teacher, they'll talk to you about the worrying rise in vaping among children," Prime Minister Rishi Sunak told reporters. "Children shouldn't be vaping, we don’t want them to get addicted," Sunak said.

The UK Vaping Industry Association said vapes had helped "millions of adults quit and stay off cigarettes", and said the proposals would put children at risk by "turbocharging the black market".

Sunak suggested the proposals struck the right balance between restricting access for children and maintaining access for adult smokers trying to quit smoking.

It is currently illegal to sell vapes or tobacco to children under 18 in the UK, but officials say that youth vaping has tripled in the past three years, and that cheap, colorful disposable vapes in flavors like bubblegum and candy floss are a "key driver."
