The artwork is shielded behind bulletproof glass. The glass protection, installed in response to previous attacks on the painting, prevented any damage to the renowned portrait.
The Mona Lisa, a world-renowned masterpiece by Leonardo da Vinci from the Italian Renaissance period, is famed for what is often described as "the most mysterious smile in the world." In recent years, however, it has repeatedly become the target of protesters venting their dissatisfaction. Notably, on May 29, 2022, an individual disguised as an elderly woman smeared the painting with cream. Fortunately, since the artwork was protected behind a glass shield, it remained undamaged.
As the customary crowd around the 16th-century painting by Leonardo da Vinci gasped in shock, the protesters, two young women, followed up their attack by passing under a barrier and standing on either side of the artwork, hands raised in an apparent salute.
"What is more important? Art or the right to have a healthy and sustainable food system?" the activists said, speaking in French. "Our agricultural system is sick." They were led away by Louvre security guards.

The protest is part of a broader movement by French farmers, who have been voicing their discontent through road blockades and demonstrations across the country. They demand better remuneration, fewer bureaucratic hurdles, and protection from cheap imports. Despite recent government measures aimed at addressing some of these concerns, the farmers maintain that the efforts fall short of their expectations.
