讲座介绍
西文典籍中译,动词to be(以英语为例)及其各种变体的非系词用法,一直是个难题。比如哈姆雷特那句名言:To be or not to be,几乎不可译。西哲学界争鸣良久,成果颇丰,参阅王路先生《Being与汉译哲学》(商务,2023)。我们今天换一角度,从摩西、耶稣等故事入手,研究to be(是/在/有/生)在圣书中的含义和用法,厘清西方本体论(“是”论)思想的宗教渊源。
The verb “to be” in its independent predicative (non-link verbal) usage often baffles Chinese readers and commentators of western philosophy, because in Chinese the verbal equivalent 是(shi) traditionally has a narrower semantic field, while common substitutions are mostly inadequate, such as 存在(cun zai) and 有(you). In this talk we shall examine the various Chinese tanslations of “to be” in the stories of Moses and Jesus of Nazareth. I’ll propose an expanded and more flexible usage for “shi”, and argue that in its directness and simplicity, “shi” retains much of the force and nuances of the orignal Hebrew and Greek and clearly prevails against all other candidates (cun zai, you, etc), both verbal and nominal. Thus, rendering “to be” as “shi” in biblical texts has the potential to reshape our understanding of western intellectual history and its theological background, with a new appreciation of the Scripture.
