The discourse of human rights, equality, and freedom was radically transformed in the aftermath of World War II. It is no longer a story of global dissemination of “Western” ideas to the rest of the world, as is commonly believed. Rather, it is the outcome of a struggle over ideas on the world stage. Take the historic inclusion of the right to self-determination in the human rights covenants at the UN. This talk is closely based on the early UN archives and is intended to rethink the translingual making of universalism in the postwar era.
