“hit the books”当然不是“打书”的意思！真实意思你知道吗

也是没想到，英语中“认真学习，

专心读书”竟然是用 hit 这个动作。

hit the books

study with concentrated effort

全力以赴的用功学习，concentrated 用来形容“专心致志的，

全力以赴的”。

举个例子 

You better hit the books，

 if you want to pass your exam on Friday.

如果你想通过星期五的考试，你最好用功读书。

显然，英语中努力学习是个“危险动作”，

不然为啥不是揍（hit）书，就是打破（crack）书。

crack the books

打开书本学习，这种表达并没有明显的努力、用功的含义。

举个例子 

You have to pass the written exam to become a fireman , 

so be prepared to crack the books!

你必须通过笔试才能成为一名消防员，所以准备好啃书吧！

注意：crack a book 和 crack the books 的语义情感可是不大一样的

。crack a book虽然也是“学习”的意思，

但通常用在消极的语境中，

大家可以在例句中体会一下。

I really need to study for that test on Monday ，

because I haven't cracked a book all weekend.

burn the midnight oil

stay up working, especially studying, late at night

熬夜工作，尤指学习到很晚。

这个短语的历史可以追溯到使用油灯的年代，

暗指深夜了还在使用油灯工作。

I have a big exam tomorrow，

 so I'll be burning the midnight oil tonight.

明天我有一个重要的考试，

pull an all-nighter

remain awake all night long, 

especially so as to study or to complete something

整夜不睡，尤指为了学习或完成某事，你是否是个熬夜er？

举个例子 

Jeff pulled an all-nighter on Thursday to get his report，

 finished for work by the deadline today, 

so I don't think he'll be coming out with us tonight.

为了在今天的截止日期前完成工作报告，
