The public absence of Catherine, Princess of Wales, has grown from a niche royal watcher concern to an international punchline in a matter of weeks.
a niche royal watcher concern
Microsoft has developed a headset it calls HoloLens, but with a price of between $3,000-5,000, it is a niche product.
Amanda soon found her niche at the club.
He's managed to create a niche for himself in local politics.
grow from...to...
The debate on whether to buy or rent a house has grown from a personal decision to a national conversation on housing affordability.
punchline 的英文解释是:the last few words of a joke that make it funny “笑话结尾处的包袱、笑点”,这个词来自表演艺术,特别是在喜剧表演中,喜剧演员通常会在故事的最后设置一个强烈的笑点,称为 punchline。
It seemed a gentle dig by the newly crowned “punchline queen” of “Rock and Roast”, a television show starring amateur comics.
文中,has grown from a niche royal watcher concern to an international punchline 是说,凯特王妃的公开缺席,已经从少数皇室观察者的关切问题,变成了一个国际笑柄。

While Kensington Palace said her January abdominal surgery was planned and indicated she would be out of the public eye through March, several unusual details — grainy photos, an altered image, vague medical information, irregular updates from the British royal family — have kept the public guessing.
这句话前半部分“While Kensington Palace said her January abdominal surgery was planned and indicated she would be out of the public eye through March”是while引导的让步状语从句,后半部分“several unusual details — grainy photos, an altered image, vague medical information, irregular updates from the British royal family — have kept the public guessing”是句子的主句。
其中“grainy photos, an altered image, vague medical information, irregular updates from the British royal family”是对“several unusual details”的展开说明,即“好几个不寻常的细节”具体体现在哪些方面。
Kensington Palace
out of the public eye
away from public view
out of public sight
not in the public spotlight
an altered image 指“修过的图片”,也可以用 a manipulated image 或 a modified image 等短语表示。
irregular updates from the British royal family
Keep me updated on the situation / status.

Catherine’s so-called disappearance has led TikTok and X users to swan dive into bizarre conspiracy theories and jokes so thickly intertextual it makes one wonder if social media really does give us brain worms.
这句话的主句是“Catherine’s so-called disappearance has led TikTok and X users to swan dive into bizarre conspiracy theories and jokes”,后面“so thickly intertextual (that) it makes one wonder if social media really does give us brain worms”修饰“ bizarre conspiracy theories and jokes”的程度。
They've gone swanning off to Paris for the weekend.
Another is to swan dive into the mire of scandal.
近义表达有 plunge into、immerse oneself in 等,如:
She was about to plunge into her story when the phone rang.
so thickly intertextual (that) it makes one wonder...这部分是省略that的 so…that…
if social media really does give us brain worms
