4-year funded junior research fellow (PhD student) position at the Institute of Psychology, University of Tartu, Estonia


Applicants are welcome to apply for a 4-year state-funded junior research fellow (PhD student) position at the Institute of Psychology, University of Tartu, Estonia. The successful candidate will work on the Estonian Research Council project “Native Language Experience and the Brain’s Perception and Learning of a Foreign Language” (2024–2028) awarded to Dr. Siqi Lyu. 


The project investigates how the tonal component in Estonian, which is of secondary status in the Estonian phonetic system, and the Chinese tone, a dominant cue to discriminate word meanings in Chinese, affect the respective native speaker’s perception and learning of a foreign language differently. The student will be co-supervised by Dr. Siqi Lyu (Institute of Psychology), Dr. Pärtel Lippus (Institute of General and Estonian Linguistics), and Dr. Kairi Kreegipuu (Institute of Psychology). 


The successful candidate will enter a fixed-term employment contract with the University of Tartu as a junior research fellow starting September 2024. The tasks of this position are to design and conduct project-related experiments, analyze the data, and write and publish the results. There are chances to be involved in teaching and/or co-supervising master’s student(s) with Dr. Siqi Lyu if the candidate wants to gain relevant experience.


Gross salary: starting from 1830 EUR/month.

We are looking for highly skilled and motivated individuals to work as full-time research assistants for aperiod of at least one year. Our preferred start date is June 15, 2024 although we are willing to accommodatean earlier or later start. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. The first review is February 19, 2024,and we will continue to review applications received after this date until all positions are filled.The job will entail close collaboration on a number of new and ongoing projects using tools from psychologyand behavioral science to answer questions across a broad range of fields. Research topics includestereotypes, prejudice reduction, judgment and decision making, communication strategies and languageprocessing, conflict management, financial decision-making, moral psychology, consumer decision-making,goals and motivation, and behavior change. Candidates will be matched to work with one or two of theprofessors listed in the header. The matching between Research Professionals and Professors will bedetermined in part based on mutual interests. The research professional will also be able to attend seminarsand lab meetings in the Behavioral Science and Marketing departments and to attend professionaldevelopment seminars at Booth. Previous holders of this position at Chicago Booth have gone on to Ph.D.programs at Harvard, MIT, Princeton, Stanford, and the University of Chicago.


The ideal candidate will have (i) the ability to analyze, interpret, and visualize complex data; (ii) the capacityto digest new research in psychology and economics; (iii) the initiative to work independently to solveproblems; (iv) a detail-oriented approach to research tasks; and (v) a long-term interest in pursuing researchin behavioral science, organizational behavior, or marketing. Background in related fields (e.g., psychology,economics) is a plus, but not necessary—we welcome candidates who are looking for more exposure tobehavioral science. 【Research Assistant Part-Time/研究助理PT(来自Charlene导师)

The Research Assistant will work with faculty in the Department of Political Science and Center for Brain, Biology, and Behavior on interdisciplinary research at the intersection of international security, American politics, and political psychology. The Research Assistant will be responsible for overseeing research on a grant-funded project focused on foreign policy decision making in Congress. Research duties will include data collection from human research participants in a laboratory setting as well as from text data from online sources, as well as data analysis and manuscript preparation. Administrative duties include managing finances, maintaining human subjects approval with the IRB, recruiting and scheduling research participants, and helping supervise and train a team of research assistants.


Minimum Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in political science, psychology, neuroscience, statistics, math, computer science or related field and 6 months prior experience working in a research lab and/or conducting scholarly research; equivalent education or experience considered. Demonstrated interest in international security, American politics, political psychology, and/or political neuroscience. Basic computing skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office. Strong organizational and communication skills.


Preferred Qualifications

Bachelors degree in political science, psychology, neuroscience, statistics, math, computer science or related field preferred. Familiarity and prior experience with human subjects research. Research skills for data analysis or willingness to learn – programming, statistical software, text-based analysis/web scraping. Familiarity with MRI techniques. Experience leading or managing a team.

Department/Program Description: The Polarization and Social Change Laboratory at Stanford University brings researchers from social psychology, sociology, political science, and organizational behavior together in a fast-paced, highly collaborative work environment to study the leading social problems of our time and to develop and test strategic approaches for affecting social change. We are looking for a hard-working and highly motivated full-time Research Coordinator to join us beginning in Spring or Summer of 2024.


Position Summary: The Research Coordinator will provide direct research support to the lab’s Faculty Director, Robb Willer; the Associate Director, Izzy Gainsburg; and the Research Director, Chrystal Redekopp. The Research Coordinator will also serve as the primary liaison between faculty, post-doctoral researchers, PhD students, and research assistants associated with the Polarization and Social Change Lab.


Research activities will consist of maintaining and expanding the lab’s large online participant pool, recruiting, and managing undergraduate research assistants, managing teams of researchers, drafting IRB protocols for lab research projects, managing and analyzing study datasets, developing, revising and programming research studies, and working with external survey vendors. Opportunities will also be available to develop individual research questions, studies, and publications.


In addition to research support, this position will provide administrative support for the lab. This may include maintaining the lab’s websites, distributing press releases, organizing meetings with affiliated faculty, staff, and researchers from various centers and institutes across campus, organizing events and small conferences, booking travel, and other duties as needed.


CORE DUTIES:

·Develop and implement study design using Qualtrics.

·Assist with development and revision of stimuli, measures, and other elements of study design.

·Field studies using online survey panels, such as Amazon Mechanical Turk.

·Process study compensation payments and thank you letters to subjects upon completion of study activities.

· Create and manage IRB protocols.

·Conduct statistical analysis and create data visualizations using programs like SPSS, STATA, and/or R.

·Hire and manage undergraduate research assistants

·Coordinate research teams consisting of faculty, postdocs, graduate students, and research assistants.

· Maintain and expand the lab’s online participant pool.

·  Organize lab meetings and other lab events.

· Establish and maintain strong working relationships with various external partners including faculty in various departments and universities, practitioners, and survey panel vendors.

· Assist with clerical duties including purchasing and organizing lab supplies and filing reimbursements for lab expenses.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Two-year college degree and one year of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.

Job Description:

• Job Title: Summer Research Assistant

• Job Duration: 10 weeks, with the possibility to re-apply for future quarters

• Compensation: $16/hour

• Primary responsibility:

o 1) Run studies (mostly in lab but some field experiments; range from simple surveys,

computer-based studies, to elaborate designs)

o 2) Recruit participants (“frontline” soliciting, scheduling)

o 3) Help with study design/program (e.g. Qualtrics, Google Docs) and data entry/analysis

o 4) Involved in multiple lab spaces:

 Mindworks (a behavioral science museum)

o Be responsive – There is a Slack channel set up for Epley RAs so that communication

within the lab is not easily ignored or lost in email bulks.

o Be responsible – There should not be any last-minute canceling of scheduled study

sessions, as this can negatively impact the efficiency of our studies; Sick days and

emergencies are completely understandable.

o Be reliable – We want RAs who are fast learners, will act appropriately, and know how

to follow detailed instructions.

o Be punctual – We want RAs who will arrive on time to scheduled study sessions and

have minimal to zero lateness.

o Preferred applicants – Psychology or Economics majors who are 2nd and 3rd year

undergraduate students, graduate students, and students with work study are preferred.

Stanford SPARQ is a behavioral science “do tank” at Stanford University, located in the Department of Psychology. SPARQ builds research-driven partnerships with industry leaders and changemakers to combat bias, reduce disparities, and drive culture change. We work in the areas of criminal justice, economic mobility, education, health, media, and technology. Our Faculty Co-Directors are Dr. Jennifer Eberhardt and Dr. Hazel Rose Markus; our Executive Director is Dr. MarYam Hamedani. 


Sample SPARQ projects include: using police body-worn camera footage as big data to quantify the impact of existing law enforcement practices on communities and identifying actionable ways to address racial disparities; developing and testing the impact of cultural narratives to combat the stigmatization and racialization of poverty and inequality; designing and evaluating strategies and tools to fight racial bias across domains (e.g., tech and social media, entertainment and television, finance and investment).


The Research Coordinator/Lab Manager will collaborate with SPARQ staff, faculty, and practitioner partners to support social psychological research that both creates new knowledge and addresses social problems. We are seeking candidates who love to be out in the world just as much as in the lab, are ready to roll up their sleeves to tackle complex social issues, and who thrive working as part of a collaborative team. 


Responsibilities

-Supporting the center’s day-to-day operations and research activities

-Selecting, training, and mentoring undergraduate research assistants

-Organizing lab meetings and events

-Designing and running studies, including creating/managing IRB protocols, programming online studies, coordinating participant recruitment and compensation

-Managing data storage and cleaning

-Organizing and preparing data for statistical analysis

Qualifications:

-BA in psychology or related social science field

-Previous research and/or work experience (experience during college counts!)

-Strong communication and organizational skills

-Close attention to detail balanced with ability to solve problems quickly and efficiently

-Excellent writing ability, in both academic and non-academic styles
