Frances Perkins was the woman behind the New Deal: she brought us the weekend, the minimum wage, the 40-hour workweek, and limits on child labor — labor achievements that laid the foundation for America’s modern middle class. Perkins was the first woman to serve in a presidential cabinet as FDR’s secretary of labor, steadfast and indispensable through the Great Depression and WWII. A self-made woman from Maine who cultivated a private life of religious faith, humility, and pragmatism, Perkins would navigate — then later shape — the male-dominated halls of power to become one of America’s most influential figures. Join us at the Guangzhou American Center for an exciting opportunity to explore the historical context of her life and celebrate her remarkable achievements.
